“It Doesn’t Matter if he Cheated, We Just Want to be Entertained”
I was watching ESPN this week and the sports coverage was on baseball and Barry Bonds. There
were a panel of people discussing his career, home runs, etc. People were e-mailing their opinions in to
this panel and someone wrote this quote, “We don’t care if he cheated, we just want to be entertained.”
How sad, I thought, that entertainment comes before values in our culture today. I had to think, “Is this
the way the sports world will end up?” Baseball today is a far cry from the game that Abner Doubleday
started. When we were growing up, cheaters never won, and winners never cheated. You played to the
best of your ability and played for fun.
But that’s just baseball. Sadly, too many churches today are focused only on entertainment and
keeping a crowd. That’s a far cry from the church that Jesus created. He never watered down His
message to get a crowd. His message was straight forward, “Repent, and be saved.” Let’s not cheat
ourselves or others by settling for entertainment, but let’s focus on the “Old Rugged Cross” and all that a
walk with God entails.
Let’s keep working for Christ and striving to get where we need to be in Him. The old song says,
“More of you, more of you. I’ve had it all, but what I need is more of you. Of things, I’ve had my fill,
and yet, I hunger still. Empty and bare, Lord hear my prayer, for more of you.” I want this to be our
heart’s prayer as God takes us to new levels in Him. “Lord, not things, not entertainment, but more of
You.”
